I came across this article from Dr. Dwight Lundell after following a link from the Whole9 Facebook page . If you’ve been following a paleo/primal diet, you already know most of this. For the rest of you, this is valuable information that could possibly save your life. As Dr. Lundell points out over and over again, the current treatment for reducing the risk of heart disease (a low fat, high carb diet) isn’t working. More and more people are dying every year and the occurrence of obesity and diabetes is now at epidemic levels with no sign of improvement.
I won’t go too deep into this as I’m not a doctor, I’m only the messenger of ideas :) Read Dr. Lundell’s article, do some research on the subject, and find your own path to health and wellness. For me, this is the path that is working and why I want to share it with you.
An excerpt from Dr. Lundell on why the current thinking of heart disease isn’t working…
…These recommendations are no longer scientifically or morally defensible. The discovery a few years ago that inflammation in the artery wall is the real cause of heart disease is slowly leading to a paradigm shift in how heart disease and other chronic ailments will be treated.
The long-established dietary recommendations have created epidemics of obesity and diabetes, the consequences of which dwarf any historical plague in terms of mortality, human suffering and dire economic consequences.
Despite the fact that 25% of the population takes expensive statin medications and despite the fact we have reduced the fat content of our diets, more Americans will die this year of heart disease than ever before.
Statistics from the American Heart Association show that 75 million Americans currently suffer from heart disease, 20 million have diabetes and 57 million have pre-diabetes. These disorders are affecting younger and younger people in greater numbers every year.
Simply stated, without inflammation being present in the body, there is no way that cholesterol would accumulate in the wall of the blood vessel and cause heart disease and strokes. Without inflammation, cholesterol would move freely throughout the body as nature intended. It is inflammation that causes cholesterol to become trapped…
I think as you do research this more and more, that you’ll see that it is backed up by science and that the over reliance on drugs to treat our problems is at a tipping point. As changing our diet is the treatment for celiac disease — I’m willing to bet that it’s the treatment of choice for nearly every chronic illness — if not the only treatment, it would certainly enhance any other treatment that may end up being necessary.
