Five Guys confirms it’s gluten-free
(except for the buns)
(via Gluten-Free Glutton)

I’ve lived in Southern California for most of my life and In-N-Out Burger is and always has been the fast food burger place of choice for as long as I can remember. I also lived in Portland, Oregon between 2005 and 2009 and that’s where I discovered Five Guys Burgers and Fries. I remember walking into a very crowded restaurant wondering if it could even compare to In-N-Out. After ordering their Bacon Cheeseburger (without the bun of course) and some fries, I was very satisfied — but it still wasn’t the In-N-Out Double Double, Protein Style (wrapped in lettuce) that I’ve come to love (I’m sure they’d wrap their bacon cheeseburger in lettuce for me had I asked). I’ll be nice here and say that I loved the fact that Five Guys offers bacon and that would be a guaranteed success for In-N-Out if they chose to do that. Another downside for Five Guys was no shakes. I never get the shakes myself, but it’s a nice after school surprise for my kids sometimes.

While this post wasn’t meant to get people riled up about which one is their favorite — or maybe it was :), I’d love to hear which one is your favorite and why.

Now the real reason for this post; Mark Basch, The Gluten-Free Glutton has reported that Five Guys has confirmed that their burgers and fries are in fact gluten-free (minus the buns). Also, that other than a few condiments, everything else on the menu is too. This is great news for fast food loving celiacs. If you have to eat fast food (something I try not to do too often), go to a place like In-N-Out or Five Guys. You’ll at least know that you’re getting something that resembles meat and potatoes a little more than some of the other better known fast food chains that have the nerve to call themselves restaurants — they’re more like faux restaurants serving food like product.

It took more than a week to get a response, but I finally got a confirmation from Five Guys that its burgers (sans bun) and fries are gluten free.

This is something I’ve read on the Internet, but I wanted to get a confirmation from the company. So I inquired last week when I was writing about the new Bubba burger Grill restaurant in Jacksonville, which also offers gluten-free burgers and fries, as long as you don’t get the bun.

According to Five Guys, the only products it has with gluten are its buns and its Heinz Malt Vinegar condiment. The Heinz ketchup it offers is gluten free.

Five Guys also says it has a fry sauce that has gluten, but that sauce is only sold in Utah. Its regular french fries “are just potatoes that are soaked in water, then cooked in peanut oil. This fryer is dedicated and nothing else is fried in this oil…

They might respond if we asked them to offer gluten free buns !! Many other restaurants have !

They slide the burgers onto the buns (touching the bun)and use the same spatula and go back to the grill to flip the burgers. This causes cross contamination, so while the burgers are gf the surface is not due to poor handling techniques by Five Guys management. I have written to inform them…but please email them too. If enough of us complain they will change their practice to taking the burgers from the grill to a cookie sheet and using tongs to place the burgers on the buns. This way gf folks could ask for special treatment and the grill would not get cross contaminated!

I’m going to take my kids to five guys tonight. Let’s hope that my son won’t get sick. He loves French fries.

Make sure you identify yourself as someone who MUST follow a gluten-free diet. Ask a lot of questions and make sure they understand you — if they don’t, talk with a manager. I hope your experience is a positive one. Good luck!

So do they cook their burgers on the same grill as their buns??? If they do then it is not really gluten free…

When will you offer gluten free buns? Love your burgers but it would be nice to have a bun with it. I know Red Robin has a great bun. Any chance you all could help of folks in need of a gluten free bun?
