Yiaourti Me Meli – Greek Yogurt, Honey and Nuts from The Shiksa in the Kitchen
I won’t even begin to say that I’ve ever heard of this or that I’m able to pronounce it, but when you look at the ingredients, you’ll get very quickly that it’s a really simple and delicious yogurt dish. I’ve mentioned more than a few times my fondness of Greek yogurt with a wide variety of things to add in (blueberries, lemon, and coconut are my usual favorites).
When I see something as simple as this, it actually makes me sad when I think of all the people that continue to eat the over processed, and ridiculously sweet packaged yogurt in their supermarkets dairy section. Eating the super sweet packaged stuff is no different than eating a candy bar, maybe even a little worse. I just don’t understand why someone would subject themselves to eating what is basically candy for breakfast.
Anyhow, take a look at this near perfect breakfast, snack, or even dessert from Tori (aka The Shiksa in the Kitchen). Give it a try and I think you’ll agree with me on how tasty it is.
This Greek dish is called Yiaourti Me Meli– Greek yogurt, honey, and nuts. They serve it at our favorite Greek restaurant in Malibu, which is where I learned about the dish. If you’ve never tried the flavor combination, you’re in for a real treat. I’ve given rough ingredient amounts below for one serving, but feel free to adjust any of the ingredients to taste. Sub pistachios for walnuts if you prefer. You can also add fresh fruit to the bowl– peaches, berries, whatever is ripe and seasonal. Lower the glycemic index by replacing the honey with agave nectar. Use Greek yogurt with any fat content you prefer… Greek yogurt is strained to remove excess moisture, which gives it a creamier taste and higher protein than traditional yogurt. This dish doesn’t require any cooking, which makes it a great choice for summer. Cool, creamy, tangy, sweet, a hint of spice… so much flavor, and only four ingredients. Plus, it only takes 2 minutes to make. Now that’s my kind of dessert!
