Dr. Samuel Gee
September 13 is National Celiac Disease Awareness Day in the U.S. — this was designated by a Senate resolution on August 3, 2010. This date was chosen in honor of Dr. Samuel Gee who gave the first modern-day description of celiac (coeliac) disease in a lecture at the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street in 1887. It’s amazing how far we’ve come since then.
If you get the chance today, hug a celiac or maybe even prepare something special for them, it’ll go a long way in showing that you understand their way of life :)

I was first diagnosed with celiac in 1951 (when I was 6 months old). It was quite difficult back then, to find a doctor who could accurately diagnose and treat celiac. We’ve come a long way…

Hi Ann, I can’t even imagine such a diagnosis in 1951. It was hard enough being diagnosed in 1999. The stories you must be able to tell in regards to people’s attitudes toward CD :)

VERY INTERESTING INFORMATION. I WAS DIAGNOSED IN 2007 AND AM DOING QUITE WELL.
THIS DR. IS MOST PROBABLY ONE OF MY ANCESTORS… ON MY DAD’S SIDE OF THE FAMILY !!

Every second person in my Irish family have celiac so I created a website to help when we travel to find restaurants. I will be adding products and recipes in the up coming months.
